Calf Rearing

Feed your dairy cow well to get a healthy calf

Animal nutritionists say that when you are feeding a pregnant dairy cow, you are feeding two animals (the cow and the developing calf in its uterus). What this simply means is that when a cow is incalf (pregnant) it needs adequate and balanced feed that is enough to meet her body maintenance and also that of the calf inside her.

Care for your calf for good milk production

A calf is your future cow. If well fed it will grow into a healthy high milk yielding dairy cow that will give you a good income. It is very important for a dairy farmer to consider three key issues to raise the desired number of productive future members of their dairy herd.

Sick calves - what farmers can do?

A good dairy cow was a well-fed and healthy calf while young. A sick calf grows into a poor cow. Dairy farmers ought to play closer attention to raising healthy calves that will grown into healthy heifers and eventually healthy cows able to produce milk for many lactations.
